What is a schema validator?
Schema markup is structured data that describes a page in a format machines read: this is a product with a price, this is an article with an author, this is a local business with an address and opening hours. The vocabulary comes from Schema.org, and Google recommends the JSON-LD format, a script block in the page code. Microdata and RDFa also work.
A schema validator reads that markup and tells you whether it is valid: the types exist, the properties are filled in correctly and nothing is broken in the code. Search engines and AI systems use structured data to understand pages, and Google uses it for rich results such as product snippets, breadcrumbs and review stars.
What the schema checker looks at
- Markup found: JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa blocks on each page and the schema types they use.
- Syntax: broken JSON, unclosed brackets and wrong nesting that make the whole block unreadable.
- Required properties: missing fields that Google needs for a rich result, for example a price or an availability for a product.
- Consistency: markup that does not match the visible content of the page, such as a different name or price.
How to read the results
Errors stop a markup block from being used: fix them first. Warnings are missing recommended properties; the markup works, but adding them can make a rich result more complete.
Valid markup does not mean Google will show a rich result. Google decides that for each page and query, and some types are now shown only for a limited set of sites, for example FAQ results. Use markup for the types that match your content: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList.
What to do after the check
- 01
Fix errors
Correct the syntax and add required properties in the template, not page by page.
- 02
Test in Google
Run the Rich Results Test from Google on key pages to see which rich results they qualify for.
- 03
Watch Search Console
Its enhancement reports show markup errors across the whole site.
- 04
Check the site regularly
Template changes break markup. A site audit catches it on a schedule.
Schema validator, rich results test or structured data testing tool?
Google retired its old Structured Data Testing Tool. Its job is now split in two: the Schema Markup Validator checks markup against the Schema.org vocabulary, and the Rich Results Test checks eligibility for rich results in Google. Our tool checks both sides for the pages that matter and explains the fixes.
Structured data is also part of preparing a site for AI answers, together with crawler access in the robots.txt checker; see GEO for the full picture.
FAQ
What is schema markup?
Structured data in the page code that describes what the page is about using the Schema.org vocabulary, usually in JSON-LD format.
What does a schema validator do?
It finds the markup on a page, checks the syntax and the properties against Schema.org and the requirements for rich results, and lists errors and warnings.
Is there a schema markup validator from Google?
Google offers the Rich Results Test. The general Schema Markup Validator is run by Schema.org and replaced the old Google testing tool.
Does schema markup improve rankings?
It is not a direct ranking factor. It helps search engines understand the page and can make it eligible for rich results, which can change how the result looks.
What are the main types of schema?
For most business sites: Organization or LocalBusiness, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList and Review. Use only the types that match the visible content.
Is a JSON Schema validator the same thing?
No. JSON Schema describes the structure of JSON data in software. Schema markup for SEO uses the Schema.org vocabulary.
